Rowing

The School has a long and proud tradition of rowing. Our rowers compete at local, national and international level.

Events include the National Schools’, Henley Royal and Women’s Henley Regattas. In recent years we have been delighted to see individuals achieve selection to race on the international stage at both U16 and U18 levels. Our alumni include World Junior and Senior medalists and Olympians as well as others racing in the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race.

St Edward’s boys’ VIII won the prestigious Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2023, beating the German national champions, as well as Hampton, Eton, Radley, and St Paul’s in the final. Teddies first won the event in 1958 and more recently in 1999. St Edward’s is one of only two co-educational schools to have taken the title since 1999, breaking the recent dominance of the event by St Paul’s and Eton.

The girls’ rowing programme has come on apace over the last few years and in 2024 the girls’ 1st VIII took silver at National Schools’, the school’s best ever result in the Girls’ Championship 8+, in an especially tough field.

The St Edward’s Boathouse overlooks Port Meadow and the famous ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford. This is a wonderful facility that contributes a great deal to School life. With kayaks, punting and skiff expeditions there is something for anyone who is into “messing about on the river”. However, with International standard coaching and facilities, the boat club is set to continue racing and winning at the highest level.
