John was at Teddies from 1973-2006 and then from 2009-2013. He died on 31st December 2021. John ran the Harriers for many years. He was involved in the Debating Society and Chess club. He was heavily involved in Chapel and led prayer groups for pupils. He was a resident house tutor in Segar’s, Sing’s and then Kendall.

We have also received these words from Guy McDougall (Field House, 1999-2004), who was taught by John Gidney during his time at Teddies.

I was very sad to learn that John Gidney had died.

He was my favourite teacher at Teddies, and the one I recall most when looking back to my time at school. He was a top man.

I was fortunate enough to have him as a teacher for 4 years (from my second year through to A levels), and I have really distinct memories of sitting in his classroom in the work block on the ground floor, in long, double, lessons in the winter timetable. It was always a very pleasant environment and there were always lots of laughs.

He had a group of us round to his house just before we left – and I remember it was a happy time.

I am grateful to the Rhubarb magazine for having let me know – but very sad news to read.
