Dr Robin James Vaughan Lenman

Class of 1963

Robin Lenman (Field House, 1958-1963).

Died 11th April 2022, aged 76.

The following obituary was kindly provided by Jonathan Scott (Mac’s, 1958-1962).

Robin’s academic career at Teddies, where he was a School Prefect, culminated in gaining a Postmastership (i.e. a Scholarship) to Merton College, Oxford to read history where he achieved a First. He went on to get a B. Phil and then a D. Phil at St Antony’s College specialising in German history. Having been a lecturer at Hull University, his main career was as a lecturer and later reader at Warwick University where he taught history with a large side line in film studies. He spent much time in Germany and the most outstanding of his publications was a book Artists and Society in Germany 1850 – 1914. His magnum opus was to edit the Oxford Companion to the Photograph, photography having been one of his many interests and enthusiasms.

On retirement he moved to Penzance. To quote John Betjeman, he was a “a gentle guest, a willing host” and no one could spend time in his company without benefitting from good amusing conversation and sometimes rigorous discussion. He is sadly missed by his many friends, his wife and daughter.
