Tribute for Anthony Clare Halliwell (Field House), brother of Michael Arthur Halliwell(Tilly’s) and Richard Edward Winter Halliwell (Field House).

Anthony Clare Halliwell was born on January 21st 1931, second son of Arthur Halliwell, surgeon at Jersey General Hospital. He and his siblings grew up flourishing in the delights of island life, dancing, swimming, and enjoying family picnics. He began his education at Hazelhurst Preparatory School in Sussex, but with the outbreak of war in 1939, the sea crossing to England was deemed too dangerous, and the family was home schooled for nine months.  After the fall of France and the threat of the German occupation of the island, Arthur Halliwell sent his wife and family to the mainland ‘for the duration’. Anthony and his elder brother supported the war effort helping on farms and delivering Christmas mail. In 1943 Anthony followed his brother Michael to St Edward’s, where he joined Field House. He played rugby for the 3rd XV and was awarded his XL colours. He also rowed for his house. He sang in the choir, became head of house and a school prefect, leaving in 1948 in the Science VIth. He decided to study medicine and graduated at Caius College Cambridge in 1953. He continued his studies at St Thomas’ Hospital, then East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. In 1961 he sailed to Barbados for a two-year placement.

On returning to England, Anthony joined the practice of a family friend in Jersey and served the people of the island, a much-loved general practitioner, for the next 41 years. In 1972 he married his Swiss wife Doris, and their son Nicholas was born in 1974. Anthony and his wife threw themselves enthusiastically into island life, joining the Amities-Franco Britanniques, and supporting the activities of the Alliance Française. When twinning the island with French towns was proposed, they supported the Association Jersey-Coutances.  Anthony, always a keen tennis player joined the Caesarean Tennis Club. A lifelong member of St Mark’s Church, he attended there regularly and was elected Almoner, overseeing the finances. Prominent in island life was the Jersey Festival Choir where Anthony sang as a tenor. He kept good care of his garden was particularly proud of the marvellous spring blossom.

After his wife’s death in 1999, he continued to interest himself in the world about him, enjoying foreign holidays with his son Nicholas until too frail to travel. He died peacefully in January 2023 aged 91. A requiem Eucharist and funeral was held at St Brelade’s Church, Jersey.
