Captain Ronald Sydney Bellis Luckman

Class of 1945

Ronald Sydney Bellis Luckman, (Field House, 1940-1945).

Died 5th November, 2022, aged 94.

The following was kindly provided by Ronald’s wife and daughter.

Ronnie Luckman as born in Faizabad, India on December 22, 1927.  At the age of 7 he traveled to England to attend prep school and then to St. Edward’s School, Oxford.  In 1939, his parents were due to retire and return to England but with the lack of cruise ships at that time, they had no choice but to stay in India until the end of the war.  Ronnie lived year-round at Teddy’s spending the occasional holiday with his aunt and uncle where he developed a love of classical music that he enjoyed until the end of his life.

Ronnie was a keen sportsman and played rugby for Teddy’s as well as being Head of House (Field House) and Head Boy.  Following school, Ronnie went to Sandhurst and received his Commission in 1948 to the Royal Artillery.  Following Sandhurst, Ronnie spent 2 years in Hong Kong and during his career as a Gunner he was stationed in Bedford, the Isle of Wight, Larkhill and served in Korea.

In 1954, Ronnie married Rosemary Dawes who he met while stationed in Bedford.  They had 3 children.  In 1960, Ronnie retired from the Army and the family moved to Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, where he started his career in industry with STC and then ITT, rising to the position of Marketing Director.  His job took him all over Europe where he acquired a smattering of many European languages!  In 1973, he made a career change which took the family to Bath.  In 1986, following both Ronnie and Rosemary’s retirement, they moved to Clyst St. George and Ronnie turned his passion for golf into a new job as Secretary of East Devon Golf Club and following that, he held the position of Chairman.  Ronnie was sadly widowed in 1998.

Ronnie was fortunate to marry Greta Moxon.  They enjoyed many years together living in Budleigh Salterton and Greta tirelessly took care of Ronnie through broken limbs, blindness from macular degeneration, lymphoma cancer, and in his declining years, a heart condition from which he died on November 5, 2022.  There is no doubt that Ronnie would not have lived until the age of almost 95 without the loving care of his wife, Greta, for which we are all most grateful.

Ronnie is survived by his brother, Peter Luckman, his wife, Greta, 2 of his 3 children, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, 2 step-grandchildren and 4 step-granddauthers.  Ronnie’s funeral was held at St. Peters Church, Budleigh Salterton, on November 22, 2022.   Ronnie is greatly missed.
