IB Results 2023

Congratulations to the IB class of ’23 who last week received an excellent set of results. Some 80% of all Higher Level grades were at 7-5 and an impressive 40% were at 7/6. Fifteen percent of pupils scored at the highest level, achieving 38 points or more (out of 45), the published threshold for Oxford.

These outcomes continue the clear upward trend in academic results at St Edward’s. The Warden, Alastair Chirnside, said, ‘I am immensely proud of this group of pupils who faced a return to the full rigours of the demanding IB Diploma after its reduced format during the pandemic; they rose to the challenge, and they have been rewarded with an outstanding set of results. I am always hugely impressed by just how much these talented and dedicated young people achieve alongside their studies. They worked hard at their books and they have excelled in their exams, but they have achieved at an exceptional level in drama, sport, dance and music, as well as in societies and leadership positions. They have led the life of the School, inspiring and encouraging our younger pupils to follow their example.’

The Sub-Warden Academic, David Flower, said, ‘These results are an excellent reflection on two years of very hard work by our teachers and pupils. It’s easy to forget that they embarked on these courses at a time when online lessons and mass-testing for Covid-19 were still a routine part of our lives. We should remember that most pupils will have missed at least a week or two of school whilst isolating. No concessions were asked for or made, instead the class of 2023 set about learning the whole of every course and they have been rightly and richly rewarded for their efforts. We feel immensely proud of them and can’t wait to see how they use these achievements to fuel the next stages of their lives.’

The Director of IB, Anna Fielding, said, ‘The pupils should be proud of the results that they have received and the fantastic opportunities that are now open to them. Whether it’s taking time out to travel or volunteer, starting work or taking up top university courses, the time in the Sixth Form has developed the skills they will need to help them to thrive. They have strong resilience and determination, an ability to organise their time and, perhaps most importantly, they are caring and work well in teams. The results are excellent but the hard work that led to them will set them up for life.’

We congratulate all our IB pupils and wish them a wonderful summer!
