Bands’ Concert — 19 April 2015
On Sunday 19th April, only a week into the Summer Term, school bands provided a magical evening of entertainment to a large audience in the candle-lit Hall. The Concert Band opened the evening with the notes of Barnard Castle, a lively march which showed the ensemble in very good form. After a brief trip to Highland Cathedral, featuring George MacPherson and Tom Hayes on the bagpipes, the programme included rare character pieces such as Two Imps by Kenneth Alford, featuring a virtuosic performance by Willa Robertson and Instant Concert by Harold L. Walters, a “spot the tune” challenge for the audience! The Brass Band then offered a finely tuned March of the Cobblers before allowing Tom Powell’s trumpet to shine in the nostalgic Solitaire by Neil Sedaka. The Modern Jazz band led by Mr Howarth followed in the programme; this was a very tight group presenting solid ensemble playing as well as confident solos by Noah Smith, Tom Powell and Will Bolam Bassett. The Big Band brought the evening to a fitting conclusion with lively numbers from Lennon & McCartney to Zawinul. A real display of musicianship and performing style from all the performers. Many thanks to Richard Powell for conducting a very successful musical evening and well done to all involved. Many thanks to the Catering Department for the delicious cheese and wine.
