“The relationship between parents and HM is so important for the welfare of the boys. It should be open, honest and operate in both directions. I always want to see parents at productions, sports fixtures and House events: it does so much for the morale of the boys.”
Location: North edge of the Quad, above the Dining Hall
psley is at the heart of the school, both physically and emotionally. Whilst we strive to be purposeful, engaging, determined and enthusiastic it is true to say there is no definitive model for the boys from Apsley: there is academic endeavour and excellence, top level sport, fantastic creative ability in Music, Art, Design and Theatre, and a desire to succeed. Apsley is an original build from the school’s first days and the House has maintained the atmosphere and feel one gets from such buildings. Many of the rooms have mezzanine floors and the fantastic mural as you enter the ground floor really tells the story of what we stand for.
The boys are well cared for by an experienced and talented group of tutors who do evening duties and see their charges at least once a cycle for 1-to-1 tutoring sessions. Matron helps to create a caring environment as well, and the relationships between year groups are strong: there is a sense of the boys looking out for one another. It is a great community to be a part of and one that allows boys to access all the wonderful opportunities the school has to offer, and to flourish as individuals.
A word from Head of House, Fergus Hill
- What’s your favourite activity as a House?
One of my favourite activities as a house is the Steeplechase, as every year group gets involved and we all support each other. Singing house chants allows everyone to feel house spirit and solidarity – it’s such an important day to have at the start of the year. This year the winner was an Apsley boy! That said, we all get to demonstrate our strengths whether that be in dance, drama, on the rugby and hockey pitch, on the badminton courts and in debating.
- What is the best thing about your HM?
Mrs Hamilton has come up with some amazing ideas to strengthen the House spirit – for example we now have a house tie. We have all been involved in the plans for the re-design of the house and have been able to suggest improvements.
- What’s the most popular in House activity?
I love it when we come together before a inter-house event. The atmosphere is amazing and we all get such a kick out of it.
- What do you do in House with the other year groups?
We have mentors and trained peer listeners which allows the Senior boys to connect with younger year groups and we are involved in Shell induction. We have nights called YAM at which we all have pizza and talk to one another. Having the common space means that there are always people playing pool or table tennis, or just chilling and enjoying each other’s company – these are the best times as people aren’t forced to be together, we choose to be together as part of the Apsley family.
