Sports Update: summer 2017 week one

The Summer Term is well underway, and the full sporting schedule is up and running with it. It’s already been a busy but very productive few days, with some dominant displays across Teddies pitches, tracks and courts.

Some sporting fixtures even got underway during the Easter holiday, with the cricket pre-season featuring regular warm up games. You can read a full report on their pre-season here. Term started positively on the cricket pitches, with the block fixture against Rugby producing a winning return of eight matches to four, and a St Edward’s XI defeated Cryptics on Sunday, with Harrison Ward scoring 101* and taking 6/65 to claim the Man of the Match.

The rowers have had a busy Easter as well and both the Schools’ Head and Sculling Head saw some exceptional results. The J16 girls’ eight came seventh in the country, whilst the J16 boys’ coxed quad came third overall, a superb performance and the School’s highest placed finish at the Schools’ Head since 2014. Teddies crews at the Sculling Head too showed promising signs for the summer, with the J14 boys’ showing real grit to come 13th and 15th for the A and B boats respectively in large and strong fields.

Boys’ athletics at Harrow on the first weekend of term brought some outstanding team and individual performances. Dekoye Coker came 2nd in the 100m and 1st in the 200m B race; Dan Brady 2nd in the 100m B race; Alfie Armitage-Hookes 3rd in the 800m; Matt Thornton 3rd in the Steeplechase; and Fergus Flory took 3rd in the 800m too. Special mention also ought to go to Alfie and to Misha Kirillov for going the extra mile for the team, competing in five events apiece.

Meanwhile, at the Radley Relays event on 25th April, the boys did exceptionally well to place in the top five of each age group in the 4x100m and the juniors of the medley relay, whilst they finished third in both the inters and seniors of the medley.

Tennis returned with a flourish this term, with the fixtures against Cheltenham College on the opening weekend. The senior boys’ won their fixture, whilst the senior girls’ drew theirs to make it six wins from eight at senior level. Whilst the junior girls’ had a tougher time of it overall, there was a strong result for the U15Cs, who won their game 6-3.
