Design Technology Awards

Art Awards for Design Technology at St Edward’s are available for entry at 13+.

All candidates applying for an Art Award must be registered and sit an online screening test and examinations which together with formal interview, will demonstrate whether they can benefit from the academic opportunities at St Edward’s.  For 13+ entry the online test, entrance examinations and interview will be taken in the January of Year 8.

Candidates for this award will show considerable natural ability and have begun to reach high standards of proficiency in their creative work, both in terms of technique and in how they develop ideas. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who make either subject a major part of their school life. For ease, good quality photographs of larger three-dimensional works, exceptionally fragile pieces or installations are acceptable in the portfolio. Work can also be viewed in digital format including on websites, CDs and USB sticks.

Design Technology offers a fusion between design thinking and making. Successful candidates will have a natural ability to solve problems creatively and engineer solutions. They will have a keen interest in the history of design and have an understanding of the processes by which products are developed and made. The portfolio should contain concept sketches, diaries and detailed photographs of finished products.

On the award day, candidates will be interviewed by the Head of Design to evaluate their enthusiasm and understanding of the subject by talking through their portfolio. They will also spend two hours in the department undertaking a short design task which will involve building a structure out of Meccano to demonstrate their competence at solving a particular problem.
