A Week In New York City
Mary Blaszkiewicz, Lower Sixth History of Art pupil, reflects:
At the beginning of December, the School’s Art and History of Art pupils in Upper and Lower Sixth had an amazing opportunity to dive into Christmas festivity and admire the breathtaking artworks in New York. The trip took six days, which may not seem much time to explore the City of Lights, but not a moment was wasted.
We were enchanted by exploring all the museums, galleries, and exhibitions which enriched our knowledge about art. We visited the Chelsea galleries where we had an amazing opportunity to talk to the artists and see their studios, and the Whitney Museum of American Art where the rhythm of modern art moved the walls of the entire building. There was also the Brooklyn Museum and the Guggenheim Museum where modernity met tradition. However, the highlight of the trip was The Metropolitan Museum of Art which surprised all of us by its collection from all over the world. In The Museum of Modern Art, every room featured a piece from famous artists like Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, or Salvador Dalí. In contrast to the vibrant city style, we also took a trip to Dia Beacon – an extraordinary museum set in an unusual old factory. The knowledge we gained by viewing these exhibitions has helped us to develop our sketches, notes, and photos – strengthening us as artists and art historians.

We also had the opportunity to visit New York’s stunning landmarks such as The Edge, Summit One, and Brooklyn Bridge. We explored the charming Christmas Markets, admired the Rockefeller Christmas tree, took to the ice in Central Park, and simply enjoyed the festive atmosphere which permeated each street. As our hotel was situated close to the famous Times Square, we spent our evenings gazing upon the marvellous projections. We were able to explore New York for ourselves, so everyone had a chance to do the Little Island Walk, get lost in Manhattan’s SoHo, or simply try a Crumbl Cookie.
Even though we’ve returned home, the City’s love of Art continues to propel us – we won’t forget our beautiful memories of New York any time soon.
