Haydn’s Creation with the St Edward’s Singers

The School’s Chapel Choirs and the St Edward’s Singers will be in concert next weekend, playing with Oxford’s world-class period instrument ensemble, The Instruments of Time and Truth. 

Taking place at 7.00pm on Sunday 14th October at St Michael’s Church on Lonsdale Road, they will be performing one of Haydn’s best-loved oratorios: The Creation. The soloists will be a group of former pupils of the School and the concert will be conducted by Neville Creed. 

The concert is taking place in support of the north Oxford based FairPlay Campaign for Climate Justice.

Admission is free and no tickets are required.

The St Edward’s Singers is a non-auditioned choir designed specifically for parents, staff, neighbours and friends. Their most recent concert was a highly successful performance of Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in their full orchestral versions.

Haydn was already Europe’s most celebrated composer when, at the end of a long career, he composed The Creation in 1798. The text is based on the story of the creation in the Book of Genesis and on Milton’s Paradise Lost. The Creation has remained one of the best-loved oratorios, and a supreme achievement of the Viennese Classical style. Haydn was given the libretto of The Creation whilst in London and expected it to be performed in English.
