Sports Update: summer 2017 week four

Another week of sport at St Edward’s has brought with it another host of successes to report on. During a particularly busy weekend, the boat club were in action at two different regattas simultaneously: the juniors at Thames Ditton; and the seniors at Nottingham City Regatta. Both appearances for Teddies were highly successful, with the boys and girls crews all among the silverware.

The boys’ 1st VIII wont the J18 event in impressive style, whilst the girls’ 1st IV came fourth in their event, and the J16 girls’ VIII fifth. Meanwhile, at Thames Ditton, nigh on every crew reached a final. Highlights include the Shell boys’ VI winning the plate event, and the Shell girls’ VIII who lost out in their plate event, but deserve much credit for a gritty performance against very strong opposition. The highlight of the day came from the boys’ J16 VI who convincingly won the coxed fours cup event. 

There were more successes for the athletics club at the weekend, especially for the senior girls’ team, who again managed to come second overall, and the intermediate girls’ team for coming third. Individual highlights include: Brandi Akpobome who maintained last week’s form to win the shot and discus, and 2nd in the javelin, missing out by just 1m to an athlete from Kingswood; Lizzie Dorey managed a full medal spread, with 1st in the 800m, 2nd in 1,500m, and 3rd in the long jump; Livi Tomacelli picked up 2nd in the long jump; Dan Brady a third in the 100m; whilst there were also 3rd places for Alfie Armitage-Hookes and Freddie Williams for the 800m and long jump respectively.

At the City Schools Championships earlier in the week, the junior boys’ team won overall, with the junior girls’ and intermediate boys’ teams finishing 2nd. Undoubtedly the star of the day was Daniel Hoggar, who won the 200m, long jump, shot and discus, but it needed a tremendous team effort overall to finish so strongly in the overall standings. Special mention from the Championships also goes to Daisy Helling who won a challenging triple jump event.

Tennis had a much quieter week than has been customary; the Shell girls’ teams played Cheam prep in what has become a regular fixture. The U14As picked up a win in a game displaying high technical ability from all the players involved. The boys’ squads travelled to Malvern at the weekend, with all teams recording victories, and the senior girls’ teams were at home on a reduced fixture list against MCS, with wins here too for the 1st VI and the 2nd VI.

The cricket club continued their frenetic pace of fixtures. The 1st XI won their T20 game against Harrow with some aggressive batting seeing an effective chase of Harrow’s 193. The XI turned out again on Friday versus PGS in the Regional T20 final. The bowling attack takes the main plaudits for that game, bowling out PGS for 111, Jamie Curtis and Ben Charlesworth taking three wickets apiece. Saturday’s match was away to Bedford and another strong display made it three wins in three days with 127 runs the margin. Captain Brandon Allen made his first century, Harrison Ward scored a half-century for the third successive innings (making 182 runs in three innings), and Ben Charlesworth also adding 84.
