Netball in Malaysia

At the start of the Christmas holidays, twenty-five pupils and four staff headed to Malaysia on a netball tour.

Jennifer Law, Teacher of Sports Science, writes:

‘This was an action-packed eleven days where pupils played five competitive games against local schools, and explored the sights of this beautiful country. Over the course of the trip, our netball skills developed, individuals progressed, and teams gelled. The time we spent with our local opposition after matches was a real highlight – their generosity and delight in having us there was heartwarming. When off the court, we took in the views from the Petronas Towers, visited the Batu Caves, interacted with rescued orangutans, relaxed on beautiful beaches, and feasted on delicious local cuisine. It really was an incredible trip, and the pupils were an absolute credit to the School and a pleasure to spend eleven days with!’

Immy Shaw and Isla Martin, Lower Sixth pupils, said:

‘The netball tour to Malaysia was an incredibly memorable experience and a trip of a lifetime. We had the most incredible time jam-packed with competitive matches, sightseeing and amazing food. One of our most memorable experiences from the trip was visiting the Petronas Twin Towers and the orangutan sanctuary. The sanctuary was so exciting, and we were even able to feed the orangutans which was truly a once in a lifetime experience. It was also fascinating going to all of the different markets in Kuala Lumpur and Penang where we were able to sample some of Penang’s famous coffee.

The netball was really enjoyable. It was fascinating to play against a different style of netball, which really challenged us, but it was fun to play against. Each team made amazing progress throughout the trip, and we now feel much more prepared for the season ahead. We all enjoyed interacting with the opposition after the game. It was lovely to talk to them about their life and culture. During the last game of the tour, a massive rainstorm came in and flooded the pitch (even though it had a roof). Along with our opposite we turned the court into a massive slip and slide – huge fun and a great way to end the trip!

Our experience was the perfect way to start the Christmas holidays, and we would love to visit Malaysia again soon.’
