Drama Awards

Drama Awards at St Edward’s are available for entry at 13+ and 16+

All candidates applying for an Award must be registered and sit an online screening test and examinations which together with formal interview, will demonstrate whether they can benefit from the academic opportunities at St Edward’s. For 16+ entry the online test will be taken in late October of Year 11 with entrance examinations and interviews in early November of Year11.  For 13+ entry the online test, entrance examinations and interview will be taken in the January of Year 8.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate considerable natural ability and have begun to reach high standards on the stage as a performer, designer or technician. The school is looking for individuals who display both talent and the attributes valued in the theatre: reliability, flexibility, dedication and team working skills.
Successful candidates will be expected to make a full contribution to the performing arts life of the school, participating regularly in theatrical productions.

Candidates are asked to submit a brief portfolio of their drama achievements, to include information on performances, workshops, examinations passed, photographs etc. Candidates may wish to submit an excerpt of one of their drama performances on video or DVD. The portfolio should be submitted with the application form.

13+ candidates

The audition will include:

  • An interview with the Head of Drama
  • Participation in a group drama activity
  • A performance of a prepared piece of the candidate’s choice; this should be no more than three minutes long and candidates should be prepared to talk about the context and content of the piece

16+ candidates

The audition will include:

  • A performance of one monologue of no more than three minutes in length which the candidate should be prepared to discuss
  • Participation in group improvisation activities

Candidates may bring a portfolio of photographs, programmes, designs etc. Being able to demonstrate a clear commitment to and interest in theatre is vital. Candidates should be prepared to discuss productions they have seen as well as productions in which they have participated. The scholarship is also open to those pupils who wish to contribute to technical theatre. A portfolio for such pupils would be essential and should include evidence of technical work carried out on productions (lighting design plans, set designs etc).
