Sport at Teddies

Participation, performance, excellence and enjoyment

The approach to sport at St Edward’s is in line with the School’s belief that the best preparation for adult life is a breadth of opportunity. At St Edward’s, we recognise that some pupils will want to excel and play sport at the highest level, whilst others wish to take part in sport purely for enjoyment and the benefits associated with physical activity.

Every pupil takes part in games at least three times a week on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon. There is something to suit everyone, with pupils able to take part and compete in a varied sports programme, enabling them to find something they enjoy. Pupils have the opportunity to play a wide range of team sports, but also participate in other sports where they may have individual talents. Through playing sport, we aim to encourage and foster team spirit, camaraderie, sportsmanship, leadership, discipline and increased self-esteem.

Please watch the film below for a snapshot of some of the sport on offer here.

St Edward’s takes sport seriously and has always had a first class sporting reputation. We compete in a strong and demanding fixture list against other schools, with as many pupils as possible playing in matches. Many of our teams successfully take part in county and national tournaments and events. Matches are mainly played on Saturday afternoons. Before a Leave Weekend or Exeat, matches are played on the Thursday afternoon.

Sport at the school is driven by a team of highly skilled coaches, a number of whom have played or coached at national level. Our top sports players and sports awards holders follow a more individualised programme to help them achieve their full potential. Pupils also have access to a Strength and Conditioning coach and an on-site physiotherapist.

Pupils are able to further develop their sport by training and competing with local and national clubs and a number of sports hold regional training sessions on the school site.

St Edward’s has high expectations of the pupils and offers outstanding opportunities for sport with its superb facilities. These include the Martyrs Sports Pavilion, a self-contained strength and conditioning facility, two astro-turf pitches, all weather netball/tennis courts, sports hall, multiple sports fields and a 6-hole golf course. Pupils are also able to make wide use of the Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Gym including indoor tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool, fitness arena, spinning room and exercise studios.

St Edward’s sports tours take pupils overseas and, in recent years, our teams have travelled to Italy, Spain, Portugal, USA, Barbados and Australia
